Artwork Commission

Hastings Queer History Collective is commissioning a new artwork for their exhibition at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, running April–August 2026. The exhibition will explore LGBTQIA+ lives, histories and cultures connected to Hastings, alongside a programme of performances, talks and workshops.

They’re looking for an LGBTQIA+ artist based in East Sussex or with a strong Hastings connection. All visual art forms are welcome including painting, sculpture, photography, digital, sound, mixed media and more.

The selected artist will receive £2,500 to create the new artwork.

Deadline for applications: 23:59, 22 December 2025.

More info on the Collective

Formed in 2020, the Hastings Queer History Collective is a volunteer group bringing local queer history to life. Through research and public events, they’re raising the visibility of LGBTQIA+ stories in Hastings Museum and the wider community.

Key Commission Dates

  • 22 December 2025: Application deadline

  • w/c 20 January 2026: Artists notified

  • 7 April 2026: Artwork delivery deadline

  • 24 April 2026: Exhibition launch

  • 30 August 2026: Exhibition ends

Application Process

To apply, complete the online form. You’ll be asked for a proposal, a short bio and examples of previous work. Video or audio applications are welcome if written forms are a barrier.
