When: October / November 2001

“cleanliness is next to godliness…but dirtiness is next to heaven” A Promenade Performance by Helena Goldwater at Dulwich Pools, October/November 2001 New Sound Design: Joseph Hyde  Performers: Sef Nakedborn, Adura Onashile, Jenni Potter, and Nicole Robinson

“cleanliness is next to godliness…but dirtiness is next to heaven” was a glorious dive into the paradise of pleasures found in everyday life. In the form of a Live Art Promenade, made site-specifically for Dulwich Pools in London, one of the few remaining period bath-houses in the country, this show celebrated and assessed an era of hygiene and bathing fast disappearing. “cleanliness is next to godliness.” took you into this extraordinary labyrinth of intimate moments and exposed displays. The synchronised-swimmer ‘s nose is clipped and the men in the cubicles have secured their towels. From the pleasures of the hot tub to the virtues of the cold shower to the rawness of filth, this magical and provocative show was a unique insight into getting wet in private, in public.
