Salon: Elizabeth Wright
When: 15 April – 18 June 2000
A white Volkswagen Caddy van sits parked squarely inside the living room, a spectre amongst the normal objects of family life. An exhibition which plays on a sense of scale and context, this industrially designed and crafted object becomes remade and recast as an art object. With echoes of the modernist devices of Surrealism and Dada, the van becomes transformed into a brilliant white sculpture, whilst the domestic interior becomes strangely unfamiliar, invaded by a new presence. This deceptively simple intervention creates a true spectacle nestled within the furniture and paraphernalia of everyday life.
