The Performing Kitchen Salon

When: July 9th – 11th 2004

The Contemporary kitchen became the site for performance in this explosion of the current obsessions and taboos of cooking and eating. ‘The Performing Kitchen’ was an ensemble performance production which included some of Britain’s leading performance artists, in a highly entertaining, incisive and humours exploration of the private and public life of the kitchen.

The kitchen and cooking has a long tradition in performance, from the infamous ‘Futurist Cookbook’ and early Fluxus meals and Happenings to the domestic shows of Bobby Baker. This show also referenced the increasing use of the kitchen in contemporary culture, as a performance space in which to promote lifestyle, entertainment and commercial concerns, as well as a sexy arena in which to play out a variety of complex roles.
