A celebration of queer food culture in the grounds of Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

Join members of the Hastings Queer History Collective for an afternoon of communal picnicking and friendly competition.

The afternoon starts with a Quiche Off, where any keen bakers can enter a savoury bake which a panel of foodies will judge based on queer creativity, flavour and presentation and award rosettes accordingly!

Once rosettes have been awarded, the entries will be cut and shared for everyone to enjoy. We’ll eat the quiches (and pies, flans, tarts, etc) and tuck into any snacks and picnics we’ve brought with us to fuel up ready for the quiz.

When food has been eaten, we’ll kick off the Queer Food History Quiz. Quiche will no doubt be part of an answer to a quiz question. Teams will compete through questions like “Which queer cabaret performer and masterful TV cook has a stylish alter-ego with spice in her name?”

Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and we will go home with our bellies full of tasty food and our brains full of queer food history knowledge.

Afternoon Schedule

2:00pm -Arriving! Set up your spot on the lawn. Enter your quiche for judging if you are taking part.
2:30pm - Quiche Off! A panel of foodies will judge the savoury bakes, awarding special rosettes.
3:00pm - More Picnic Time! The savoury bakes will be shared and we will tuck into any other food we brought with us for the picnic.
3:30pm – Quiz time! A queer food history quiz hosted by Serge from the Hastings Queer History Collective with special prizes awarded.

Thinking of baking? Here is what to know -

While called a 'Quiche Off' the baking competition is about any round and savoury baked good! You can enter a pie, a flan, a tart, a pizza - anything round and savoury.

On the day you will need to bring your savoury bake to the judging table between 2:00pm and 2:20pm.

With the bake bring a list of ingredients, a dish for it to be served on (if not in its container) and a name for your bake.

Judging will begin at 2:30pm sharp.

The picnic takes place in the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery grounds.

The building will be open with an accessible toilet, which is also marked as gender-neutral.
